The Colorado Sun isn’t robocalling you. Here’s what to do if you get a call. >>

Our Mission

The Colorado Sun is a journalist-founded, award-winning and nonprofit news outlet based in Denver that strives to cover all of Colorado so that our state — our community — can better understand itself.

In this way, we believe we can contribute to a more vibrant, informed and whole Colorado.

We are committed to fact-based, in-depth and nonpartisan journalism. We cover everything from politics and culture to the outdoor industry and education.

How we are funded

As of Nov. 15, 2023, The Colorado Sun is a 501(c)3 nonprofit. Prior, we were a public benefit corporation, which meant we were a for-profit company incorporated with a mission. Our mission remains unchanged: To provide our community with quality, nonpartisan journalism — and no paywall. To read our most recent annual report, please visit  coloradosun.com/annualreport. (Here are our past reports: 20192020/2021)

The majority of The Sun’s funding comes directly from reader memberships, with additional revenue from donors, business sponsorships, events and grants. More on how we accept sponsorships and our transparency rules can be found in our ethics policy.

Every dollar we take in goes directly toward the journalism we produce. Period. That’s our promise to our readers — along with striving to make sure each and every one of our stories are worth your time. Join us today.

The Colorado Sun can now accept tax-deductible contributions.

We were fortunate to find partners interested in creating a new model for local journalism. Civil helped The Colorado Sun get started with some financial and technical backing. We no longer are partnered with them.

To become a sponsor, email sylvia@coloradosun.com.

To learn more about membership, visit our membership page or email lauren@coloradosun.com.

Commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion

The Colorado Sun is committed to the work of fighting racism, bigotry and exclusion, and to promoting a more just and equitable world. Read our statement codifying that commitment, which includes actionable goals to hold us accountable.

SunLit

Through a feature we call SunLit, done in partnership with Colorado Humanities & Center for the Book, The Colorado Sun will present current excerpts of works from some of the best Colorado fiction and nonfiction writers — always for free. We offer these literary appetizers, as well as author Q&As to lend context to the selections, as part of our mission to reinforce our shared sense of community, and to perhaps introduce readers to a new favorite writer.

Opinion columns

The Colorado Sun is a nonpartisan news organization, and the opinions of columnists and editorial writers do not reflect the opinions of the newsroom.

We label opinion pieces (including cartoons) prominently, using the clearest words possible to note that they are separate from news coverage. This includes when we post links to opinion pieces on social media accounts.

For more on how we will handle opinion pieces, see our ethics policy.

If you are interested in sending a guest column to be considered for publication, check out our submission guidelines. Submissions must be 800 words or less and should be sent to opinion@coloradosun.com.

Annual reports

In our previous designation as a public benefit corporation, we were required by state law to produce an annual report detailing the value we have brought to the community. It also required us to conduct an assessment of how we were doing against an independent standard. Read our reports.
